February 2023: Lent and Fellowship

By Monthly Updates

With the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday, February has been a time of celebration and preparation. Waverly Presbyterian has been busy celebrating the season within our community and the world.

Men’s Mardi Gras Brunch

The men of Waverly Presbyterian working hard (or hardly working)

The men of Waverly rolled up their sleeves and served all sorts of breakfast foods on Sunday, February 19th. An old tradition of Waverly Presbyterian, the men of the church prepare, serve, and clean after a Mardi Gras brunch including eggs, sausage, pancakes, and fruit salad. In total, the breakfast took 144 eggs, a few pineapples, and a lot of elbow grease. The men of Waverly certainly stepped it up this year, serving over 60 people. And no one left with an empty stomach.

Ash Wednesday Service

We held our Ash Wednesday service in the Social Hall on Wednesday, February 22nd at 7 P.M. The swift service was a reminder of the new season we’re entering: a time of reflection and discovery about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. At the end of the service, Pastor Caitlin marked people’s foreheads with ashes.

Free For Good

Pastor Caitlin is switching up our regular book club into a group called Free For Good. In this group, participants are encouraged to voice difficulties and struggles they are currently going through, no matter how big or small, material or spiritual. An important aspect is the lack of response: as listeners, we are encouraged to only respond with “thank you for sharing” as opposed to any specific advice or sympathy, free the listener of their internal struggle with the situation and freeing the listeners from the burden of finding solutions. Waverly’s first Free For Good discussion began on February 27th at 7 P.M. in the Social Hall. The program is planned to run at least until the end of the Lent season each Monday of the week.
