Position Description 

Title: Director of Music Ministry 

Purpose: To plan the music program with the pastor and the Worship and Music Committee; to coordinate and direct the music component of worship services. 

Accountability: Accountable to the pastor as head of staff.

Responsibilities: 

  1. Meet weekly with the pastor and monthly with the Worship and Music Committee to plan a schedule of music in keeping with the church year; recommend music suitable for choirs, ensembles, or soloists
  2. Direct and accompany weeknight and Sunday morning rehearsals of the adult choir or other worship leaders/groups; schedule and accompany rehearsals to prepare special ensembles and soloists
  3. Direct and accompany choir and special group performances: accompany congregational singing
  4. Play instrumental music, using the keyboard, organ, or other music as planned
  5. Engage youth and children to participate in music within worship
  6. Maintain an orderly system for storing music and equipment
  7. Prepare music and equipment prior to rehearsals and performances
  8. Recommend purchases of music and equipment, and repairs or maintenance to the Worship and Music Committee

Qualifications:

  1. Interest/ability in incorporating diverse musical styles
  2. Ability to play piano and direct choirs, including directing from the keyboard

Relationships: Relates to the pastor as head of staff and to the Worship and Music Committee

Evaluations: Performance reviews will be conducted annually by the pastor as head of staff and the Chair of the Worship and Music Committee. The Personnel Committee will annually review the adequacy of compensation and make recommendations to session for changes if needed

Salary/Benefits: $8,000 – $10,000 annual salary at 8-10 hours per week; 4 weeks vacation; opportunity to buy in to the PCUSA’s Board of Pensions and Medical Benefits
