…here in this place, new light is streaming…
Waverly has a very active youth program — “come as you are” (and bring friends)! We include questions, doubts and fears as part of our exploration of faith, work to create a safe and accepting peer group, help others less fortunate, and have lots of fun. Youth of all ages participate in all the activities of the church.
Sunday School and Worship
Weekly Sunday School follows the lectionary with a curriculum designed for different age levels. During worship, there is nursery care available for our very youngest while other youth participate as acolytes, musicians, offertory collectors, readers, Wuppeteers (Waverly puppets), and lead the entire service during Youth Sunday. This year our Sr. and Jr. High classes began a 6 week study of the White Privilege and Systemic Injustice Curriculum, which included watching parts of the documentary 13th, and engaging in discussion with speaker Rev. Caitlin Werth, Pre-release Director at Foundation of Hope.
Youth Group (grades 6 – 12) meets weekly on Sunday evenings for study, games, and mission. Youth Group members also participate in yearly retreats and other special activities. A Youth Group visit to Pittsburgh’s Islamic Center in the fall of 2016 led to Waverly’s hosting of Muslim Ally Training in January 2017, in which over 75 people from Waverly and the surrounding community participated. Villains (boo!), heros (yay!) and heroines (awwww!) abound in Opera House, which raises funds for camp scholarships. Our annual Opera House, running steadily since the 1970s, brings a zany musical melodrama to the stage with the usual “forty-piece orchestra.” (wink-wink!) Free salty, salty popcorn and drinks (not free) are always essential for this experience.
